Well, anyway, I really enjoyed watching "Swing Wide" and its a pretty cool, upbeat, hip-hop song too! Very well filmed and performed. The guys on the mics got some really good vocals going on SHO NUFF!!! :O)
But there were just a couple points on the post production/edit side which I would try to improve a bit on next time. First of all, in the beginning, you need to SLOW DOWN the text much more as it disappears too quickly and is too fast to read sometimes. Now, I know that there is alot of personal style differences involved here too, but, unless I do a full-on Japanese - English subtitled clip, then text is basically something that I tend to limit and/or save towards the end, if I use it at all. Believe me, it is not easy nor a simple matter and there is an entire school of art involved in text animation and titling. Really, its true.
For example, let's look at Noah's classic clip: The Highclass Elite "Turn of the Century...New York City" and just take a quick look at the first 10 seconds only then stop the video and watch the first 10 seconds only one more time and stop it again. And notice here, how Noah uses VERY BIG brilliant 3D text that is generating right with the music at a speed that we, the viewers, can easily read it. Also, notice how Noah has the text all perfectly centererd right in the middle of the screen. Watch the fist 10 seconds again a few times, and notice how easy and smooth the text flows along with THE BEAT of the music. Yes, this too, is very, very important. And, as he always does, Noah NAILED it to the beat right right on time. That is, indeed, some very professional and truly excellent text animation and titling. And, again, it is not easy to do at all. So, try to keep that in mind next time around.
Also, you may want to try to add a wider variety of effects instead of repeating animated square masks over and over. Try doing composite picture-in-picture editing more and also faster camera switches. You also want to add feather edges to the sides of any masks that you animate. Sharp edges kind of hurt people's eyes, but feathered edges, and blended composites are much easier to watch and also go much better with motion graphics and musical combinations in general. You did that more towards the end of "Swing Wide" and that was good - I could see it all improve more towards the end when you made me more and more homesick! ;O)
Just remember, basically, you want to move the graphics of the video to the beat of the music and be right on that beat every time. And, beleive me, it is NOT easy to do and it takes years and years of trial and error before you can really lock your moving picture totally to the beat all the time. I've been doing video editing for over seven years now and I still miss the beats sometimes and it is frustrating as HAIL! But overall, you did a pretty good job with "Swing Wide" and I really like the song and the happy people and sunshine and nice cars and DANG! You really know how to make a guy feel homesick homey! ;O)
Now, please don't get excited or hurt by this, I'm only trying to guide you in the best way I know how. And when you have time, try to check out Noah's Betzefer "Early Grave" video and notice that even at such a fast tempo, all the camera switches and quick transitions happen right on the downbeats even at such a supersonic speed. And, that, my friend, is, in fact, a professional MTV music video. And I think that is why we are all here, right?!?! Well, we'll get there one day and we can do it. But we got to want it with feakin' passion for years and years, and keep editing everyday and eveynight that we can and then we'll get there, I know we will. But, honestly, in my opinion, I seriously doubt that anyone will ever be as good as Mr. Noah Shulman. Well, I know I won't at least. No way Jose!
